"Colors of Fall" Poems
Written by Mrs. Dingman's 5th Grade
September 2009
Figurative language creates clear and compelling images. We chose our favorite color word associations for the season of fall for this writing project and used a rough draft organizer to help us begin to think about things we associated with those colors, using our 5 senses. We worked our way through the writing process, beginning with preparing a rough draft, revising to make our writing clearer or more interesting, and illustrating our final edited copies. We reviewed nouns and adjectives, discussed phrases, and identified similes in our writing.
We had a brief introduction to research skills as well as we searched Crayola.com for clearer and more interesting color word choices, choosing a Crayola box favorite.
We made excellent use of the technology available to us in the classroom. Rough drafts were prepared using Microsoft’s Word. We practiced using the Spell Check Tool, experimented with font color for the text of our poems, and were introduced to the Bold Tool. We are quickly building confidence and independent comfort using our laptops.
This writing project aligned with the following Pennsylvania Academic Standards:
1.2.5 Reading Critically in All Content Areas
1.3.5 Reading, Analyzing and Interpreting Literature

Colors of Fall
Fall is atomic tangerine
like a fat pumpkin being carved
a lighted jack-o-lantern in the darkness
and a small fire burning ashes
Fall is razzmatazz
like a falling leaf dancing in the wind
a robin singing
and a beautiful rose glistening from the morning dew
Fall is sepia
like tree bark reaching toward the sky
a bloodhound howling a song
and a log cabin still as night
Fall is unmellow yellow
like a large sunflower twirling on its stem
a bumblebee buzzing around
and a bunch of leaves piled up
Fall is happiness

Colors of Fall
Fall is brick red
like a colorful laffy taffy that is chewy
an ordinary leaf that is small
and a dirty car that needs to get washed
Fall is sunglow
like a gigantic orange that is moldy on the inside
a puny raft that is floating
and a bright sunset that is horizontal
Fall is laser lemon
like a broken pencil that is split into two
a sweet banana
and a diagonal pattern that is long
Fall is raw sienna
like an obese bear that is in the forest
a big tree that is filled with termites
and a leather coat
Fall is calm, peaceful, and beautiful

Colors of Fall
Fall is neon carrot
like a delicious pumpkin on a Halloween night
a yummy orange in the afternoon
and a perfect basketball waiting to be thrown
Fall is sepia
like a football waiting to be thrown at a game
a tall tree giving its oxygen
and a cute dog sleeping in a home
Fall is scarlet
like a decorated folder in a school house
a cool shirt to be worn
and a cherry Jolly Rancher to be eaten
Fall is pine green
like a big leaf that is going to fall slowly to the ground
a small frog hibernating in the bottom of a stream
and a broken crayon that will be fixed
Fall is great and it is fun
Colors of Fall
Fall is fuzzy wuzzy brown
like the smooth soil in the rain forest
a bumpy leaf falling from an apple tree
and a sleepy bear snoring in its cave
Fall is golden
like a tall pencil writing a story
a proud eagle soaring high
and the round gold stacked up tall
Fall is razzmatazz
like a glad robin looking for worms
a mischievous fox looking for a rabbit
and a roaring fire in a fireplace
Fall is outrageous orange
like a fat pumpkin getting harvested
a cute bird singing its fall song
and a soft cat purring
Fall is very relaxing!

Colors of Fall
Fall is razzmatazz
like a beautiful flower in a meadow
a cool bird sitting in its nest
and a rare ant running across the ground
Fall is sunglow
like the pretty sunset at the end of the day
a fuzzy peach growing on a tree
and an unusual bug walking along
Fall is magic mint
like the fresh grass in the morning
the salty ocean, which is always fun to visit
and a crunchy leaf laying on the ground
Fall is fuzzy wuzzy brown
like a scruffy dog playing and having fun
the hard dirt that is safe to step on without falling
and a pointy stick which someone stuck in the ground
Fall is the most colorful season

Colors of Fall
Fall is mahogany
like a dying leaf lying on the ground
the rough bark from an oak tree
and an aggressive dog always ready to protect
Fall is razzmatazz
like a blooming flower beautiful even when it's picked
a ripe apple hanging on a limb of a giant tree
and a squirming caterpillar trying to get away from a bird
Fall is atomic tangerine
like a shining sun bright on the horizon
the perfect pumpkin to turn into a jack-o-lantern
and a soaring bird flying into a nest
Fall is unmellow yellow
like a honeycomb that bees don't want to share
a tall pencil to write this poem with
and a tiny lizard desperately trying to get a bug
Fall is as colorful as can be
