Powerful Personification Poems
Written by Mrs. Dingman's 5th Grade
March 2008
Figurative language creates clear and compelling images. We chose an emotion to personify, giving human qualities to feelings we may have. We wrote with insight and creativity, demonstrating our understanding of the power of personification.
Ahhh, but we weren't done... We searched online for a graphic image to compliment the emotion chosen for our poem, making excellent use of the technology available to us in the classroom! Enjoy our poetry!

Depression's Depression
I saw depression clearly
She was beautiful and upset
She turned and looked out the door to gaze at the breath-taking night sky
I saw her drooping eyes and blood-red lips
And heard her whispering to the wind
And felt her joy blow away in the wind as she sat there even making the sky cry
Embarrassment
I saw embarrassment clearly
She was sweaty and shamefaced
She turned and looked at me, her best friend
I saw her clammy face and glassy eyes
And heard her sobbing out loud
And I felt that she looks up to me as a best friend
Anxiousness
I saw anxiousness clearly
She was distraught and jumpy
She turned and was startled by what she saw
I saw her shaky arms and quivering legs
And heard her scream in astonishment
And I felt bad for her and her nerves
Scaredness
I saw scaredness clearly
She was exhilirated and heartless
She turned and started shaking
I saw her trembling eyes and sad face
And heard her start to say how lonely she was
And I felt strange because she was not joyful and too aware of what was behind her
Excitement
I saw excitement clearly
He was crazy and moonstruck
He turned and looked at me like I was bee-headed
I saw his unnatural funny bone and enormous hands
And heard him chirp like a bird
And I felt like a bird too
Tiredness
I saw tiredness clearly
He was drained and restless
He turned and fell asleep on a flat rock
I saw his worn-down leg and resting hand
And heard him snoring in the woods
And I felt he needs to go home
Curiosity's Stare
I saw curiosity clearly
She was misunderstood and mysterious
She turned and glared at me for two whole minutes
I saw her beady eyes and shocking pupils
And heard her screaming in my ear
And I felt stunned at first but then I was ready
When I Saw Joyfulness
I saw joyfulness clearly
He was smiling and healthy
He turned and said, "Hi, how are you?"
I saw his puffy cheeks and elongated arms
And heard him singing about great times he had
And I felt like singing with him so I did

The Anger I Felt
I saw anger clearly
He was enormous and steaming
He turned and punched everything in his path
I saw his gigantic arm and burning head
And heard him make a mess, throwing everything down
And I felt terrible
