Twas the Night Before Christmas... Our Way
December 2007
Re-Tellings Written by Mrs. Dingman's 5th Grade
We recently listened to a number of versions of “Twas the Night Before Christmas”, enjoying a variety of re-tellings of this well-loved poem. We considered rhyme, rhythm, and word choices. And then, we created our own "Twas" poem.
We added our individual distinctive voices and humor, and wrote with creativity and thoughtfulness. We were challenged by this assignment, and as usual, rose to it!

Twas the Morning After Vacation

Twas the morning after vacation
Kids need to go to school
Everyone was disappointed
Except Jason, who follows every rule

Parents said goodbye
When children got on the bus
But as soon as they got on
They started a great big fuss

Paper airplanes, candy wrappers,
Spitballs, and shoes
Were flying everywhere
 That was the news

But as soon as they got off
Nobody moved his or her mouth
Not even the lad
Who came from the south

Again in their classrooms
They didn’t even mumble
All they did was
Make the teachers stumble

And to that very day
After every Christmas vacation
All the little children
Face terrible devastation

Twas the Night Before Vacation

Twas the night before vacation
And all through the school
Every child thinking about presents and gumdrops
Should I give my dad a tool

Is Santa coming to my house this year
I don’t know
If he doesn’t there will be some tears
Maybe he will make footprints in the snow

Tonight is the night all children are fast asleep
So Santa will
Come and fill the stockings
All the children saying I hope he doesn’t spill

In the morning the children awake to the smell of cookies
And yippee there are some presents for everyone
Except for the bad kids
Even though the fathers say you’re my favorite son

Today is the day all they family rushes in
Everyone saying hello… hello
Some giving school pictures to all family
And all the men saying you’re such a good fellow

After all the family leaves
It’s time to get some rest
Time to do the dishes… pull up your sleeves so they don’t get wet
Everyone saying today was the best

So goodnight to all
And tonight a good rest
tomorrow there’s a ball
and today was the best

Twas The Night Before Vacation

Twas the night before vacation
I was playing my play station
Then I saw a mouse
Running around the house

So I looked for a broom
I found it in my room
It ran out the door
There was something on the floor

I got a rag
And a bag
I cleaned it up
Then saw my pup

He ran out the house
To get the mouse
I said get back in here
His face dropped to a tear

He came inside
And went to hide
Then I went upstairs
And I found two pears

I put them in the trash
And found some cash
I gave it to my mother
She said give it to your brother

Okay, I said
But my brother was in bed
I kept the money
And went to get the honey

Twas The Night Before Vacation

Twas the night before vacation
And I dreamed of a dreadful dream
That I took every mean kids’ toys
Every kid let out a big scream

I stole all the toy trains and trucks
I let out a loud gigantic roar
I stole all the toy pups and bears
I read the books, which were a bore

I thought quite hard about my choices
And decided it was true
I’m as mean as those with no toys
I’m as mean as you, I tell you

I changed my choices… my mind, too
I gave all those kids back their really fun toys
I had a wonderful feeling inside
For all the toys of girls and boys

I smiled a great smiley grin
I was as happy as can be
For I had taken the joy
But put it back and let it be

I went into my own old world
With a grin still upon my face
I had saved my own world… Yippee
Now I am a nice person, ace

Maybe I’ll meet my world again
And save its people once again, too
Maybe another world will come
In my great dreams or inside you

Twas the Night Before Vacation

Twas the night before vacation
When all the kids were asleep
Not a mouse woke the night
Not a cat made a peep

All during the day
When the kids jumped and shouted
Every kid had a happy face
Not even one pouted

They all called each other
So they can stay around
When they all gathered together
They headed for the playground

They had so much fun
When they were sliding
Until something happened
They all started crying!

Even though they were hurt
They were all still laughing
And still not one pout
But they were all just panting

When they were done playing
On the playground
They called for their parents
While the kids waited at the baseball mound

On their way home
The kids pretended to be asleep
But all the parents knew
In the car, they didn’t weep

So on the way home
They drove and then they said, “oh, no”
And then all of a sudden
It began to snow!

When the kids all got home
They ran out to play
They told their parents
They were going to play all day

The parents all got the kids’ snowsuits on
As they all jumped up and said, “hooray”
When they all went outside
At the end of the day!

Twas The Night Before Vacation

Twas the night before vacation
And everyone was packing
The children were so excited
They couldn’t stop their clapping

I was playing at the time
With some of my friends
We decided to race
But there were a lot of bends

Then I had my supper
Some ham and mashed potatoes
I really really liked it
But I had to eat tomatoes

The tomatoes were disgusting
But I had to eat it all
Finally I was finished
I’d rather get hit by a ball

Then I went to bed
And had a good dream
But my brothers woke me up with their very loud yelling
They were very very mean
